Certain tradespeople identified as “essential critical infrastructure workers” in Guidance for Response to COVID-19

Wastewater professionals that provide critical services recognized by Department of Homeland Security as paramount for ensuring continuity

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a Coronavirus Guidance for America identifying certain tradespeople as “essential critical infrastructure workers” as the nation responds to the threat of COVID-19.

In a detailed Department of Homeland Security memorandum issued by Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, CISA's Director Christopher C. Krebs announced development of an initial list of Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers “to help state and local officials as they work to protect their communities, while ensuring continuity of functions critical to public health and safety, as well as economic and national security.”

The list identifies those professions deemed essential to continued critical infrastructure viability and advises that such workers to continue normal operations, appropriately modified to account for Centers for Disease Control (CDC) workforce and customer protection guidance.

“…service providers who provide services that are necessary to maintaining the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences,” are specifically recognized on the list. The official document can be viewed here.

Providers within the wastewater industry that collect, transport and dispose of septic-wastewater are dependent on commercial trucks and operators that are further regulated by Federal DOT/Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which is also issuing directives in response to corona-virus.

Toilet Paper Woes

Toilet paper, empty rollThe media has had reports of municipal sewer systems being inundated with items ‘other’ than toilet paper. This comes on the heels of the run on toilet paper nationwide.

The problems caused by flushing anything but toilet paper are clogs in plumbing on premises, backups in the municipal sewer infrastructure and overburdened capture systems as raw sewage enters wastewater facilities.

If you own a home with a septic system, you have your own mini wastewater system that you are tasked with maintaining.

Even though a septic system is ‘out of site and out of mind’, damage to a septic system can be easily avoided.

Never flush other items used. Only flush toilet paper. If you must use something else, place it in the trash can.

Your septic system will thank you by giving you years of trouble-free service.
